Agate (achates) was named from the river Achates, now the Drillo, in Sicily, where the stone was first identified. It is cryptocrystalline quartz (micro crystals) usually with a banded pattern (although not always). |
Additional Information |
Carnelian is more of a term to descirbe a solid red (red-brown) - translucent agate. It is not from a particular locale, but rather the red color. It is usualy not banded, but can be. The word is derived from the Latin word meaning horn, in reference to the sometimes fleshy color. |
