General Info: |
Agate (achates) was named from the river Achates, now the Drillo, in Sicily, where the stone was first identified. It is cryptocrystalline quartz (micro crystals) usually with a banded pattern (although not always). |
Additional Information |
Botswana agate is known for its distinctive banding, and strong contrasts. The best are often referred to a "shadow banding" where there is a strong contrast between each band, making it appear like the lighter bands are casting shadows. (This sample is not of that quality.)
It is typically found in the black to gray color series, but also peachy, and pinkish material comes from the locale. Second cab cut by author.
