Agate (achates) was named from the river Achates, now the Drillo, in Sicily, where the stone was first identified. It is cryptocrystalline quartz (micro crystals) usually with a banded pattern (although not always). |

Crazy Lace agate comes from Mexico and has a somewhat distinctive pattern and color combination. It is often found with multicolored paisley type patterns. It often contains large amounts of iron making red banding, sometimes with hematite banding. It is not a nodular agate, but it occurs in veins or larger masses. This cab cut by author. |
