Agate (achates) was named from the river Achates, now the Drillo, in Sicily, where the stone was first identified. It is cryptocrystalline quartz (micro crystals) usually with a banded pattern (although not always). |

Found in Horse Canyon, Tehachapi , California. The site is closed to collection now. The moss can be green to tan in color and has a very "open" almost spider-webby structure. The most desired from the area is the wide up structure moss, it is one of the most distinctive characteristics. The agate also has a translucent base and may contain fortifications.
