Agate (achates) was named from the river Achates, now the Drillo, in Sicily, where the stone was first identified. It is cryptocrystalline quartz (micro crystals) usually with a banded pattern (although not always). |
Additional Information |
The Keegan ranch agate is also a tube agate similar to Ochoco lace. It is found on the Keegan Ranch in central Oregon. It tends to be a bit more wispy (than the Ochoco Lace) and comes in a translucent base. Like the other tube agaes I tend to cut it using a backing material to provide more contrast between the tubes and the background base.
All cabochons cut by the author. They are mounted on black agate as douiblets.
