Spodumene is from the Greek, "spodoumenos", which means "burnt to ash" alluding to the grey color of early specimens. Kunizte was named for George Frederick Kunz, a New York jeweler and the first to describe the pink variety. |
Additional Information |
These are two native cut kunzite stones that were sold as "kunzite with rutile". This type of material has been documented as found in Madagascar, although these stones have no such paper trail. The rutile is showing weathering or decomposition under magnification, some of the apparent rutile crystals are actually empty or partially empty tubes. |
