The name comes frm the Greek words meanng smooth (psilo) and black (melane). It does not have one chemistry but is a solid solution between several manganese oxides. |
| Additional Information |
| The top stone has balck jade border and psilomelane center. The second stone is 100% psilomelane. Both stones were cut by the author. The top stone shows the similarity in patterns that are often seen in malachite when cutting through botryoidal lumps of material. The bottom stone clearly illustrates the two phases. |
